The Kimberley Health Centre will be able to conduct x-rays for a few extra hours each day.
Currently, the Kimberley Health Centre can only do x-rays between 11:00 am and 4:00 pm Monday to Friday.
Interior Health East's Health Services Director for Medical Imaging Scott Edmonstone says that is now being extended to a 9:00 am to 5:00 pm schedule.
"It's an opportunity for us to, one, kind of align the hours with the physicians there that run the clinic, and the purpose is to assess how it'll impact patient outcomes."
He says Kimberley's doctors have been advocating for the extension for quite some time after being told by patients that the current service level was limited in the community.
In addition to providing more convenience to patients by not forcing as many trips back and forth between Cranbrook, this is also expected to afford doctors more time in the day to deal with referrals with facilities in the Key City, meaning that results can be returned more quickly.
"We want to impact and improve both areas, so I don't think it's a competition or anything like that. I think we want to kind of offer similar services to both areas."
The trial run begins in May 2019 and runs until the end of August.
Should it prove to be successful, Edmonstone says they will look into whether the change should be made permanent.
