Sparwood Black Bear Exhibiting Aggressive Behaviour

WildSafeBC Elk Valley reports that a black bear in Sparwood has been exhibiting strong aggressive behaviour the past number of days, subsequently alerting residents to the bear's presence.

Reported along Sparwood's Cedar Drive, WildSafeBC Elk Valley said residents should be aware of the bear and taking any and all necessary precautions to avoid an encounter.

If in an encounter with a bear, WildSafeBC Elk Valley said it's imperative to stay calm and not run away.

WildSafeBC Elk Valley offered the following tips:

  • Let the bear know you are human (arms out to the side)
  • Use your voice in a calm, assertive manner.
  • Back away slowly and allow the bear an escape route
  • Never turn your back on wildlife
  • Do not approach or feed wildlife

Any human-wildlife conflicts should be immediately reported to the BC Conservation Officer Service at 1-877-952-7277.
