Salmon Arm RCMP say two people were shot Sunday morning during church services, but the incident is not believed to be religiously motivated.

Police were called to the Church of Christ around 10:30 am on Sunday, April 14th.

The church was hosting an event when RCMP claim a 25-year-old man entered the building and shot two of the parishioners.

Salmon Arm RCMP say the pair were seriously wounded and required urgent medical care. One was declared deceased at the scene, while the other remains in stable condition in hospital.

Next of kin have been notified for the deceased victim. Information on the victims' identities is not being released at this time.

The suspect was taken into custody after reportedly being wrestled to the ground by several parishioners, as RCMP say the parishioners seized the rifle that was used.

"While the investigation is in the preliminary stages, there is no information to suggest there are any ongoing threats to public safety.  Police have determined that at least one of the victims was known to the suspect, and it is not believed at this time the event was religiously motivated", says Staff Sergeant Scott West with Salmon Arm RCMP.

An investigation into the shooting continues with the assistance of Southeast District Major Crimes.

The suspect remains in custody with charges pending.
