Lightning Sparks Four New Wildfires Across East Kootenay Friday Night

UPDATE: BC Wildfire Service has confirmed that the Island Pond wildfire between Canal Flats and Skookumchuk is now 100% contained.

BC Wildfire Service says the small fires started Friday night.

The largest of the four blazes is burning northeast of Kimberley along the White Creek, just south of St. Mary's Alpine Provincial Park. That one is 0.6 hectares.

The agency reports three of the fires started in the Elk Valley Friday night.

One is in the Olivia Creek area just north or Fernie, currently 0.01 hectares.

Another two, near Weigert Creek between Sparwood and Elkford, are each 0.01 hectares as well.

All of these new wildfires were the result of lightning.

Altogether, there are 15 active wildfires throughout the region.
