Cranbrook RCMP Investigating "Horrific Assault" Over the Weekend

According to police, a woman was attacked with a knife, cutting much of her face.

Cranbrook RCMP were called to the emergency room at East Kootenay Regional Hospital early Sunday morning.

A woman told the attending officers about a slash mark going from her ear down her jawline to her chin.

Constable Katie Forgeron says a "significant amount of stitches" were needed to close the wound.

Forgeron says the victim and the suspect knew each other beforehand, adding that this was not a random attack.

"She was able to give investigators enough information as to the identity of the individual," adds Forgeron. "We were able to secure search warrants to warrants for the arrest of the individual and located him at a residence in Cranbrook."

The 37-year-old suspect was arrested and remains in custody.

He has been charged with aggravated assault.

RCMP say the alleged attacker is a resident of Cranbrook, while the victim was visiting town from Saskatchewan.
