A release from the organization claims that a volunteer misappropriated tens of thousands of dollars that would have funded the team's upcoming trip to Japan.
The Cranbrook Friendship Hockey 2019 group says they were looking into their finances in preparations for their travel to Japan when they "uncovered some serious misappropriation of funds by a trusted volunteer."
They say the damages total more than $30,000 and counter much of the fundraising efforts of families over the last 18 months.
"The Cranbrook 2019 Friendship Kootenay ICE Hockey Team is currently evaluating their position and any opportunities to recover the deficiency to ensure the trip can still be completed so the athletes can create lifetime memories," the group writes in a press release.
RCMP have taken over the investigation. Summit 107 has reached out to the local detachment for comments.
The alleged fraud was found just 12 days before the team was set to leave for Hachinohe, Japan for the PeeWee International Friendship Hockey Tournament. The tournament runs from April 27th to May 5th.
